Annie Chapman, the second victim of Jack the Ripper, was born in Paddington on September 25, 1840, as Eliza Ann Smith, 5’0 tall, with a pallid complexion, blue eyes, and dark brown wavy hair. She was the oldest of five children.

She married John Chapman on May 1st, 1869, He was related to her mother, so in reality, he was related to her. The marriage is hit with a lot of rough patches due to tragedy. The eldest of the three children passed away from meningitis when she was young, and their youngest son was unable to walk on his own, so he was sent to a charity school for care. Annie had a huge problem with the bottle and that was another issue that put their marriage on the rocks. The funny thing is she’s never labeled an alcoholic.

On Christmas Day in the year 1886, John Chapman passes away. Annie found herself in Spitalfields, which had affordable lodging. Even though they separated in 1884, John was paying Annie about 10 shillings a week, but since his passing, Annie would have to find a way to keep her lodging and eat. She was nomadic around the area of 35 Dorset Street, paying eight shillings a night for a double bed. She was like many other women around the area.
