Elizabeth Stride was born to the name Elizabeth Gustafsdotter near Gothenburg in Sweden. She was nicknamed “Long Liz” She was 5'5, so her nickname was unique. In February 1866 she moved to London and married John Thomas Stride on March 7th, 1869, in which they ran a coffee shop together and had nine children, but their marriage did not last. After their marriage, Liz started living in workhouses in which she would say that her husband and two of her nine children drowned in 1878 on Princess Alice in the River Thames where they were working at the time and she survived by climbing the mast.

Liz was known to be a prostitute in Sweden and eventually returned to her old ways in London after some time to survive. Liz would also clean rooms in the lodging house at number 32 Flower and Dean Street, where she lived on and off for the previous six years. She would get paid sixpence for chores from deputy keeper Elizabeth Tanner. When work was done she would go to the pub about 6:30 pm at the junction of Fashion and Commercial Streets and by 7 pm she had returned to the lodging house. Liz was gone again at 7:30 pm according to Charles Preston.
